Synthetic images purporting to portray Venezuela's president in custody after his apprehension by the United States have garnered countless of views across the internet.
How Fake Pictures of Maduro Emerged Rapidly
Initial fake synthetic picture apparently displaying him led off a plane circulated shortly after. The graphic was absent from any official US channels; it was instead published on the platform X by an profile purporting to be an “AI video art enthusiast”.
We’ve checked Google’s SynthID, determining the image was generated or edited with generative AI.
Further AI-generated pictures were disseminated in the ensuing hours, seemingly depicting more angles of the leader detained. Noticeable identifying marks on these pictures show they came from an Instagram account named ultravfx.
SynthID confirms these additional images were similarly produced using generative models.
Authentic Image Posted but Fakes Continued
Donald Trump released the initial authentic image of Maduro in handcuffs aboard the USS Iwo Jima on that morning. But even after the authentic image was released, synthetic images kept circulating but were altered to show the gray sweatsuit seen on Maduro.
Online investigation show these altered fabrications were first posted on TikTok by a digital art profile. Similarly, the AI-watermark detector confirms these subsequent pictures were generated or edited Google AI.
