British government has placed eleven further destinations to its official warning list concerning the dangers of industrial alcohol contamination from contaminated beverages.

The updated warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the incidence of reported cases" of toxic alcohol poisoning.

Only a few weeks ago, officials had earlier included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, following multiple high-profile cases including the tragic demise of half a dozen visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being warned that even tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can result in vision loss or loss of life within 12 to 48 hrs.

Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Employed?

Methanol is a harmful chemical commonly employed in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and thinner. This chemical is not designed for drinking.

While it is naturally produced during the manufacture of beverages, licensed producers lower it to non-dangerous concentrations for ingestion through the purification method.

But in certain nations, it is illegally mixed into alcoholic drinks to save money, and since it is tasteless and smell-free, it is impossible to detect.

Official Guidance for Travellers

Government representative Hamish Falconer stated that all travellers should know the signs of methanol toxicity.

"If you're having drinks overseas, choose reputable establishments and avoid local brews or free shots," Falconer advised.

"Should anything feels off, such as a hangover that's much more severe than usual or blurred eyesight – contact a doctor right away."
