Thomas Tuchel Criticizes Home Crowd Support Despite Dominant Win Over Wales.
The England head coach expressed his regret that the England team did not get greater support from the home spectators during their impressive triumph over Wales on Thursday evening.
Tuchel was happy to see his side showcase their strong performance, with finishes from Morgan Rogers, Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the initial stages settling the match. But, he was not content with the energy at the iconic venue.
“With limited training days to prepare against a drilled team and we did very well,” the coach stated. “It could have been five goals ahead at the break. We couldn’t score the additional ones. The stadium was silent. We didn’t get support from the stands. Our team gave their all to win.”
“What more can you give in 20 minutes? We didn’t let them get away. When you only hear just the Welsh supporters for 30 minutes, it’s disappointing because the team deserved greater backing today.”
“I maintain this statement. There’s nothing more than being three goals up in a rivalry match. I hoped for a greater backing in moments where it is challenging.”
“After halftime, to get behind us, there was a bit too much backing for the opposition. It might have aided us to regain energy, but that’s football and that is it.”
Selection Choices Vindicated by Display
Apart from risking a dispute among fans, Tuchel also caused a stir by omitting Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden from his team selection. However the decision was validated by Rogers impressing again in the No 10 position and getting his first international goal.
“He is what he is,” Tuchel explained. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is fighting for his place.”
Wales Manager Seeks Lessons from Defeat
Craig Bellamy expressed hope that Wales, who host a strong Belgian side in a important World Cup qualifier on Monday, learn from their awful performance in the opening period.
“That’s the reason I scheduled this match,” Bellamy stated. “I wanted to assess where we are. Where do we want to go? Who do we want to be? This performance fills me with drive.”
Injury Concern for Striker
Ollie Watkins was substituted at the break after colliding with a goalpost and is a concern when the national team play Latvia in Riga in a World Cup qualifying match on next week.
