JP Morgan Mandates Biometric Data for Corporate HQ Entry
The banking leader has notified staff members moving into its state-of-the-art corporate base in New York that they must provide their biological identifiers to gain entry the high-value building.
Change from Optional to Required
The financial firm had initially envisioned for the collection of employee biometrics at its recently opened tower to be voluntary.
However, staff of the leading financial institution who have begun work at the corporate hub since this summer have been sent communications stating that biometric entry was now "compulsory".
How Biometric Access Works
This security method requires employees to submit their fingerprints to pass through security gates in the entrance area rather than using their identification cards.
Building Specifications and Capacity
The main office building, which allegedly required an investment of three billion dollars to develop, will ultimately act as a base for thousands of workers once it is fully occupied later this year.
Protection Reasoning
JP Morgan opted not to respond but it is believed that the implementation of physical identifiers for entry is intended to make the facility better protected.
Alternative Access Methods
There are exemptions for specific personnel who will still be able to use a ID card for admission, although the criteria for who will employ more conventional entry methods remains unspecified.
Complementary Digital Tools
In addition to the implementation of physical identifier systems, the organization has also released the "JPMC Work" smartphone application, which acts as a digital badge and center for staff resources.
The platform allows users to manage guest registration, use building layouts of the premises and pre-order dining from the building's nineteen food service providers.
Industry-Wide Trends
The implementation of stricter access protocols comes as US corporations, particularly those with substantial activities in the city, look to strengthen protection following the shooting of the CEO of one of the leading healthcare providers in summer.
Brian Thompson, the boss of the insurance giant, was fatally shot not far from the bank's location.
Potential Wider Implementation
It is not known if the financial firm plans to implement the biometric system for employees at its branches in other important economic centers, such as the British financial district.
Broader Workplace Monitoring Trends
The action comes amid discussion over the employment of digital tools to observe staff by their companies, including tracking physical presence metrics.
Earlier this year, all the bank's employees on mixed remote-office plans were instructed they have to report to the workplace five days a week.
Leadership Viewpoint
The bank's chief executive, the prominent banker, has referred to the company's state-of-the-art 60-storey headquarters as a "tangible expression" of the institution.
Dimon, one of the world's most powerful bankers, recently warned that the chance of the American markets crashing was significantly higher than many financiers anticipated.
