Rob Edwards along with O'Neil are two of the initial candidates in the frame to replace the former manager as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was dismissed on the weekend following the team's ten-game without a victory beginning to the Premier League season.
Furthermore both candidates - both of who have previous associations to the club - are part of the options to be considered by the club ownership.
Edwards is presently at Middlesbrough, which would create a possible obstacle to his appointment at Wolves' stadium.
However the ex- Luton head coach - who made more than 100 of games for Wolves during his playing career - is said to be a strong candidate for the vacancy.
The mid-career manager is said to have support from the Wolves directors as they start the search of appointing a fresh manager.
Gary O'Neil is also emerging as a unexpected contender, although he would be a shock choice given he was released by the club in the previous winter.
The ex- West Ham United player is currently unemployed which means the club would not need to pay any buyout fee.
