Australian Tennis Star Kasatkina Declares Season Hiatus Citing ‘Psychological Pressure’

The nation's highest-rated women's tennis player has opted to take a break until the end of the 2025 season, admitting she is at her “mental and emotional limit.”

Reasons Behind the Decision

The Australian No. 1, who this year altered her allegiance to compete for Australia, credited the move for contributing to considerable “mental and emotional strain.”

Other reasons included the continued challenge of being away from her loved ones and the grueling circuit routine.

“I've been far from fine for a long time and, to be frank, my match outcomes and showings reflect that,” she wrote on social media.

She stated, “The reality is, I've encountered a barrier and must stop now. I must take a hiatus. A rest from the tedious cycle of professional tennis, the suitcases, the results, the expectations, the regular competitors (apologies, ladies), each element involved in this life.”

Personal Struggles and Future Hopes

“Each person has a limit I can deal with and handle as a female athlete, all whilst competing with the top competitors in the world.”

“Should this be seen as weakness, then that's acceptable, I'm weak. That said, I know I am strong and will grow by being away, recharging, recalibrating and revitalizing. It's time I paid attention to my instincts for a change, my thoughts, my feelings and my physical self.”

The athlete chose to switch nationality after departing her home country due to fears for her security, having previously criticized the country's legislation targeting LGBTQ+ individuals and the invasion of Ukraine. First living in the UAE, she relocated to her new home and secured long-term status in March.

She subsequently became engaged to companion an ex-Olympic athlete, who previously earned a second-place finish for her birth country at the 2018 Winter Olympics after initially participating for her home country of Estonia.

The tennis star also revealed she has been unable to visit her parent, who stayed behind in Russia, for four years.

Professional Background

A French Open semi-finalist in the past, the player had ended the recent years among the world's best but is presently outside the top 15 after a mixed season where she won 19 and lost 21.

She is likely to exit the top 20 by the time the home major takes place.

The tennis veteran stated she will return in 2026, “recharged and motivated,” with the lead-in to her local Grand Slam probably acting as a comeback goal.

Wider Context

Australia's second-ranked player is Maya Joint, placed 35th in the world.

Kasatkina is the most recent leading female player to end their season early, following other prominent players, amid a notable increase of competitors stopping mid-game.

The WTA mandates elite athletes to appear at a set number of tournaments, including the four grand slams, top-tier competitions, and six 500-level tournaments.

But elite competitor Iga Swiatek remarked in the past, “It's just impossible to fit it all in the calendar. Maybe I will have to choose some tournaments and omit them, although they are required.

“We must think carefully about it - not really unfortunately care about the rules and just consider what's healthy for us.”
