A Tooth Fairy Tale Review: Cartoon Journey with a Touch of Family-Friendly Tween Romance

In this animated journey aimed at tweens, the fairy community is dedicated to gathering baby teeth of sleeping children and leaving gold under their pillows. Board-riding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about devoting his life to collecting baby teeth—a feeling that’s completely understandable. He is just slightly more interested in the financial workings behind it all: the fairies deliver the teeth to mysterious goblins, who provide metal in exchange. But Van’s curiosity is piqued when he spots a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be far from the ugly gnome he expected.

An Unlikely Connection and Shared Threat

Everything is prepared for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of teen romance (though it’s very much suitable for children). The fairy and goblin groups are separated from each other, and nothing fuels the thrill of the forbidden to bring people as one. Both groups as seen here are incredibly similar, yet both maintain prejudiced beliefs about the opposite side. The fairies are supposed to be entitled sorts, given to stealing anything they want, while goblins are reportedly stupid, smelly, and primitive, but are actually bright and advanced in technology.

Naturally, this scenario needs a common enemy to unite against, and that need is met by a group of vicious spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret about their intentions: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they make for fairly bloodthirsty, if not especially competent, villains.

Target Audience and Final Thoughts

There aren’t very many children’s animations aimed at the viewer group that is beginning to have early romances, but aren’t yet mature enough for the content teenagers view these days instead of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster falls into this age group, this is unlikely to become their new all-time fave, but it’s a decent choice.

A Tooth Fairy Tale releases in movie theaters in Scotland starting October 10 and across the United Kingdom beginning October 24.
